Blizzard Babies @ Backroad Barnyard
3/17/2026

Sunday brought us a full-on Minnesota blizzard - the kind that makes you double-check chores, add extra bedding, and keep a closer eye on everyone in the barn. It also brought new life.
In the early morning hours, Ruby quietly got to work and delivered her very first litter of nine healthy piglets. For a first-time gilt, she handled it like she’d done it a dozen times before. By the time we made our morning rounds, she was settled in with her piglets nursing, warm and content despite the storm raging outside.
Then, as if the day hadn’t already been full enough, her sister Roxy decided it was her turn. By Sunday evening, Roxy had farrowed nine piglets of her own.
These two girls are sisters and this is their first time farrowing, but you wouldn’t know it. From the start, they’ve been working together, sharing space, and co-parenting like pros. They've kept all eighteen piglets close, warm, and accounted for, even as the temperatures dropped below zero and the wind howled outside the barn.
There’s something special about seeing that kind of instinct kick in. No stress, no chaos - just two good sows doing exactly what they’re meant to do.
Moments like this are why we do what we do.
Raising pigs on pasture, giving them the space and environment to follow their natural instincts - it pays off in ways you can’t always measure, but you sure can see it when it matters most.
Eighteen little reminders that even in the middle of a blizzard, life doesn’t slow down; it shows up strong.
